The National School Sport Strategy. Update
The strategy launched in 2003, has agreed funding for more than ÂŁ1.5 Billion, in place until 2008.
The main aim is to increase the proportion of school age children (5 to 16 year olds) who spend at least two hours a week on high quality physical education.
The target for this year is that 75% of pupils achieve this, rising to 85% in 2008. By 2010, the aim is to offer all children at least 4 hours of sport, two hours within the curriculum and two hours beyond the school day.
At the heart of the strategy – is the School Sport Partnership – linking secondary and primary schools and the authorities Specialist Sports College. Each partnership receives around £270,000 a year to help spread good practice and physical education expertise round all partnership schools – which pays for staff and coaching time to increase the amount of extra – curricular sporting festivals, tournaments.
