Monday 29th of October saw the launch of the Schools on the Move initiative at The Thomas Hepburn Community School. Over one hundred and fifty pupils and their pastoral team were provided with brand new pedometers. Their challenge, to measure their initial weekly steps and, from that baseline data, set themselves ever increasing targets by incorporating many different activities into their daily lives.

To help to highlight the different activities that could count towards their daily total, the physical education department set a number of varied challenges as part of the Every Child Matters strategy during the annual Children in Need event. This included some sports; such as football and trampolining but also activities such as self defence and dance.
Mr Rankin, the coordinator of the initiative within the school, said, “I’m really happy with the way things are going and my main challenge, now that everyone is using their pedometers correctly is to try and introduce more “step equivalent” activities. These were introduced during Children in Need but I need to keep the students interest levels high”
