Cardinal Hume Summer Newsletter

The Newsletter for the Cardinal Hume Cluster is now available.

Cardinal Hume Catholic School

Newsletter

July 2008

• The summer term always brings with it the thought of having to complete the PESSCL survey and my thanks go out to all of you for completing and submitting it on-line in the allotted time. Not a nice task I know but a necessity if we want the funding for the School Sports Partnership to continue.
• This term saw 3 tournaments/festivals running with over 140 pupils participating. These were the Striking & Fielding Challenge, the 7-a-side football and the Year 1 Play Day. All events were successful and my thanks go out to the pupils from Cardinal Hume who ran 2 of the events and also to Joe at Birtley St Joseph’s for running the whole afternoon of football.
• The Intra-School Skipping Challenge should now be up and running in all primaries in the cluster and hopefully with good results. Trophies are in all schools to hand to the winners and certificates to those with good results.
• The Aquathlon was held on a very wet day (even the run was like being in the swimming pool) but with great results and well done to all of the pupils who participated in the appalling conditions. Birtley St Joseph’s teams excelled themselves.
• The weather was much better for the Primary Athletics held at the Stadium. Most of the Gateshead primaries competed with some excellent results.
• A reminder please to any school who has not yet claimed their 10 days supply cover to send in a claim form immediately or you will lose the money! Contact me if you are unsure.
• Also a reminder that you should be completing your year 6 assessments for pupils starting Cardinal Hume School in September. Please forward to me. Also thank you to those of you who gave me information about activities running in your school over the year. This was much appreciated for my End of Year Report.
• Lastly, in theory, I am retiring at the end of this term and I would like to thank you all for the help and support you have given me over the years. I say in theory, because I have been asked to continue the job until December if a replacement is not found when the interviews take place next week. Watch this space!

DSCF2106.JPG
The Year 1 Play Day held at Cardinal Hume consists of 10 multi-skills activities which are undertaken by all of the 110 pupils attending.

The Play Day was held at Cardinal Hume Catholic School for 110 year 1 pupils from 4 of our feeder schools. These were St Anne's, St Oswald's, St Joseph's and Birtley St Joseph's Infants.
DSCF2107.JPG

The sun shone and we were priviledged to be the first people to use the astro turf area for a glorious afternoon. The activities were supervised by some of the year 9 girls who did a marvellous job supervising (and at times entertaining) the pupils and my thanks go out to them because they contributed to the success of the afternoon.

TOP LINK Football for Cardinal Hume Cluster

The Top Link Football Festival was held for Girls and Boys at Birtley St Joseph's Junior School on 19th June 2008. 5 primary schools participated making a total of 5 boys teams and 4 girls teams competing in a round-robin tournament.
SL380121.JPG

The competition was designed for those pupils who do not get a chance to play on their school team so that more pupils get a chance to compete against each other.
img alt="SL380129.JPG" src="http://www.gatesheadpeas.org/SL380129.JPG" width="250" height="187" />

The tournament was a huge success with Birtley St Joseph's girls and St Augustine's boys lifting their respective trophies. It even only rained the once for a short time!
All pupils played in the spirit of the game with no referees.
Well done to all.

Year 3/4 Striking & Fielding Challenge

The year 3/4 Striking & Fielding Challenge took place at Cardinal Hume School on Wed 21st May 2008.
DSC_0011.JPG

St. John the Baptist Primary School brought the whole class consisting of 26 pupils and St. Anne's brought 3 teams (12 pupils) so that we could have an inter-school competition. Space was limited as the Sports-hall was being used for exams and the hard areas and fields are not completed yet at the new school.
DSC_0041.JPG

The activities were held on the yard run by year 12's who organised and ran the event as part of their course.
DSC_0041.JPG
The day was dry if a little cold but the children didn't feel that as they competed against the other teams in all of the activities. The winners were St. Anne's 'B' team who won the gold medals, St. John's 'E' team took silver and St Anne's 'C' team won the bronze medals.

The Spring Term Newsletter for the Cardinal Hume Cluster is now available.

Cardinal Hume Catholic School

Newsletter

Spring Term 2008

• The Family Plan for the next 3 years is now completed and all PLT’s have a copy of it. We all need to set targets from it to ensure that as much as possible is completed in the time span.
• Since the PESSCL results from last year, the Cardinal Hume Cluster has 100% of primaries having at least 2 hours of PE & School Sport in curriculum time. Only Cardinal Hume itself needs to improve!
• The year 4 Multi-skills Festival took place at Cardinal Hume School on 30th January 2008 and 7 teams from 4 primaries competed. Also 6 teams from 3 other primaries took part in their own schools. Altogether approx. 300 pupils took part which made it a great success.
• The Sportshall Athletics followed this on 13th February with 64 pupils from 4 primaries taking part. From these athletes, a team was chosen to represent the cluster at the finals. The Cardinal Hume Cluster team came a credible 6th.
• Lastly this term was the newly devised year 2 Multi-Skills Festival with 38 pupils from 2 primaries taking part at Cardinal Hume School and 88 pupils from 2 other primaries taking part in their own schools. Great fun was had by all. A write up and photos from all of these events can be found on the ‘peas’ weblog.
• The KS1 and KS2 Skipping Challenge trophies and certificates are now into all primaries so this intra-school activity should be getting underway.
• ‘Funfit’ has now been introduced into St Anne’s and St Wilfrid’s which will hopefully begin to tackle the problem of obesity.
• Next term sees the Yr 3&4 Striking & Fielding Challenge in May, the Girls’ Mini Soccer Tournament and the boys and girls Football Tournament, both in June and the Yr 1 Multi-skills (Playday) at the beginning of July. Hopefully these will also be well attended.
• 10 x 2nd year Northumbria University students successfully completed their 30 hour placement in primaries and Cardinal Hume School. My thanks to all who looked after them so well.
• 8 x 1st year students should have now finished their 10 hour placement with thanks.
• Please could Pam Pow (SSCo) have information concerning which clubs are running in schools and numbers of girls/boys involved, as well as information about any coaches brought into the school so that she can complete her end of year report.
• Lastly, a reminder that your supply cover claim form should now be with me. Some schools have not claimed any days yet and it is important that you claim all 10 or we will lose the money. Please submit ASAP.
• My thanks for all the hard work you do as a PLT. The next PLT meeting will be Tuesday 20th May, 1.30pm at Cardinal Hume Catholic School and I hope to see you all then.

7 teams from 4 cluster primary schools came to Cardinal Hume School to take part in the Multi Skills on the day of the festival but another 6 teams from 3 schools also took part at other times in their own schools in a 'virtual' festival with the scores all being put together to get the final results.
Doing the festival this way was hard work and took more time but was very rewarding with 113 pupils eventually participating.
All seemed to enjoy the event wherever they took part and it was a great success.

Cardinal Hume Newsletter Dec. 2007

Please read the December 2007 Newsletter for the cardinal Hume Cluster

Cardinal Hume Catholic School

December 2007

This has been a busy term. Firstly, the hiccups of moving into a new school and the lack of communication with the outside world for the first ½ term caused chaos.
Secondly, the placement of 10 students from Northumbria University into our cluster schools which was completed with thanks to the schools concerned who have turned themselves inside out to accommodate them.

End of Project Report
This report is now with the heads of all our cluster schools. Attached to the back are the PESSCL results for the whole cluster as well as graphs showing the Ghd/Whickham partnership results against the rest of the country. Please try to have a look at either your head’s copy or read the version on the peas website at www.gatesheadpeas.org
The partnership has improved greatly and this cluster achieved 90% of primary schools achieving 2 hours PE in curriculum time.

Tournaments
Neither the High 5 Netball nor the Mini Basketball Tournaments took place at Cardinal Hume this year.
St. Anne’s and Birtley St. Joseph’s played against each other at Lord Lawson School with St. Anne’s becoming the winners and going on to the final. Good Luck to them.

PLT’s
Caroline from St. John’s has now begun her maternity leave and we wish her a healthy and speedy delivery.
Paul from St. Augustine’s has left the school and gone on to pastures new and we wish him luck in his new job.

Activemark
Well done to all the 9 schools who have been awarded Activemark this year. This is achieved from results submitted in the PESSCL survey.

Students
There are 10 students from Northumbria University currently on placement in our cluster schools and I will be out to assess them in the week beginning 21st Jan ’08. My thanks for all the hard work put in by the staff looking after them in the schools.

Gateshead Cross Country
Birtley St. Joseph’s girls ‘A’ team were the champions with their ‘B’ team coming 3rd. Well done on an excellent result.

Cluster Family Plan
The family plan has now been completed for the next 3 years so the Action Plans for this year will come from this shortly.

Disability Audit
Could I please have a list of all the young people in your schools who have a disability; which schools have SEN’s, what are their SEN’s, what age and gender are the pupils. Please note this is not just the pupils who have a statement. The audit is for the Special Schools so that activities can be adjusted with these pupils in mind. Thank you for your help.

TOP LINK Girls Football Tournament

Top%20Link%20G.%20F-ball%20005.jpg
Top%20Link%20G.%20F-ball%20003.jpg
This year it was decided to hold a girls' 6-a-side football tournament for Top Link.

The Top Link girls' football tournament was held on the first afternoon of what was to become the 'Monsoon Season'.
4 pupils who attended the Top Link training conference organised the event for year 5/6 girls to be held on the 12th June. They devised and printed a flyer which was sent to all schools. Entries came in from St. Joseph's. St. John the Baptist's, St. Augustine's and 2 teams from Birtley St. Joseph's Jnrs.
St. Augustine's didn't turn up so 4 teams were mixed up to try to get even games and were given countries names.
They all played each other then the top 2 and the other 2 played an extra game, all refereed by 2 of the Top Link team.
All received medals and certificates which they thoroughly deserved for managing to play through the worstening rain.
A good, if wet, afternoon was had by all and my thanks to the Top Link team and their volunteers for running a well organised event.

The Striking and Fielding Challenge was held at St Edmund Campion School on Tuesday 23rd May. Two schools brought along 2 teams each and they competed against each other over 10 different activities.
Some of the year 10 Junior Sports Leaders supervised the events and kept a running total with a mad dash at the end to give out the results.
All the pupils seemed to enjoy the activity with the winners being a team from St Anne's and the runners up a team from St John the Baptist's.
Well done to all the competitors, a thank you to the staff who gave up their time to bring the pupils and to the year 10 JSLA students for their contribution to the event.

Easter 2007 Newsletter

This term our primary schools have been very active with 5 different activties taking place in a short term.

This term has been busy starting with the Year 3 Springs Tennis Challenge which 3 of our primaries were involved with.
Following this came the Year 4 Multiskills Challenge which, again, 3 of the primaries entered. A good evening was had by all. St Peter's were the winners.
Next came the Sportshall athletics which once again was entered by 3 primaries and won by Birtley St. Joseph Juniors. From this competition, a team was picked from the winners to represent the St. Edmund Campion Cluster at the finals held at the Gateshead International Stadium. The whole team put in a tremendous effort to come 5th overall.
The schools Dance Festival was held recently and this was a big event held over 2 days at Gateshead Leisure Centre. As yet, I do not know which of our primaries were involved but I know that the whole event was a tremendous success.
The town Swimming Galas are currently underway and I am sure that quite a few of our schools are involved in these.
This year we received funding to train staff and run a Playground Buddies Scheme. I am now trained and will be training staff in those schools who replied as soon as the equipment arrives.
Primaries now have a copy of the assessment sheet which we are piloting in this cluster to hand information over to the secondary school with the incoming year 7's.
Information relating to activities held and clubs running has been received from some PLT's and I thank these people for making my job that little bit easier.
I hope you all have a Happy Easter.

Teams from Birtley St. Joseph's, St. Anne's and St. Oswald's all competed for the girls, boys and overall trophies.
Each team was made up of 8 girls and 8 boys and everyone had to take part in one track, one field and one relay event.
Thanks go to Leanne Brown who brought extra equipment and helped make the evening go smothly and also to 4 year 12 CSLA students and numerous year 10 JSLA students without whom the event could not have happened because they took responsibility for timing, measuring and scoring.
Everyone worked hard at their own events to gain as many points for their school as possible.
The results were a clean sweep for Birtley St. Joseph's winning the girls, boys and overall trophies with St. Anne's runners up in the girls and St. Oswald's in the boys.
A team has now been chosen using pupils from all three schools to represent St. Edmund Campion Cluster in the finals at Gateshead Stadium on 1st March.

The 3 teams who entered had a great time completing the 10 different activities that make up the multi skills challenge. The events were run by year 10 pupils from St. Edmund Campion School who are completing their Sports Leaders Level 1 certificate. They did an admirable job explaining the various activities to the teams as they changed activities .
The whole event was eventually won by St. Peter's School who accumulated the most points throughout the evening. Well done to them and also to the other 2 teams who were not far behind. All the teams worked hard and fairly to provide an excellent challenge

Newsletter for Sept. - Dec. 2006

St Edmund Campion School hosted 2 cluster festivals this term in High 5 and Year 2 tennis. The basketball tournament was unfortunately cancelled as only St. Anne's entered. However they did take their 2 teams to the Lord Lawson cluster tournament which they went on to win. Congratulations to them!
The High 5 Netball tournament was fiercely contested by St Peter's and St John's and as this ended in a draw a replay was arranged which St Peter's went on to win and then represented our cluster in the final where they did very well.
Only St Peter's came to play in the year 2 Tennis Festival so they played each other at singles. All received certificates and chocolate bars. This was a disappointing entry as the festival was run at the PLT's request. Thank you St Peter's.

All schools have now been provided with either Val Sabin or LCP Schemes of Work.

A questionnaire was completed by all of our cluster heads and the response was positive from all of them. My thanks for their continued help.

Congtatulations to Birtley St. Josephs for winning the Eden Colliery Cup (football) and now go on to represent Durham County in the North of England Championship. Details from this can be found on the B. St Josephs weblog.

The gymnastics festival took place this term and it was nice to see some of our schools there. Well done to all.

So far I have only had information about clubs running etc. from 2 schools and as I have asked for this at the end of each term I would appreciate a response from the other schools ASAP please. I cannot complete my reports without this information.

A reminder of forthcoming dates:-
Delivering inclusive Games using TOP Sportsability resources on Mon 15th Jan
Springs Tennis Challenge on Tue 23rd Jan. NB. If you have received tennis coaching you are committed to enter.
PLT Module training (OSHL) on Thur 25th Jan.
Multi Skills Challenge on Tue 6th Feb. Info coming.
Sportshall Athletics on Tue 13th Feb. Info coming.

The St Edmund Campion Cluster decided to hold a tennis tournament for the year 2's after they had been having coaching. The tournament was arranged for 4th December but only St Peter's managed to bring a team.
The 3 boys and 3 girls played each other in a round robin with one boy winning overall. It was nice to see some of the skills being developed and used well.
All went away with a certificate and a bar of chocolate and all semed to enjoy the games.

St Peter's and St John the Baptist's RC Primary Schools played all 4 quarters of a well played and extremely close game. Goals were elusive as shot after shot failed to find the net and the resulting score of 2 goals all was an excellent result.
Well done to all who competed.

TOP Link 7-a-side

The Top Link girls 7-a-side tournament took place on the St. Edmund Campion School field on 15th June on a pleasant afternoon.
The whole event was organised by 4 pupils from year 10 who went on the TOP Link training day at Teeside University. They then co-opted others from their year group to help in various roles to make a successful tournament.

3 schools entered this tournament bringing a total of 21 girls.
7-a-side 004.jpg

The TOP Link team went through a warm up with them before dividing them into 3 teams. Each team consisted of pupils from all 3 schools in an attempt to create even teams.
The teams were given the country name of Argentina, England and Brazil.
Pupils organised the draw, refereed the matches, kept the score, took photographs, organised refreshments, announced the results, gave certificates and either gold, silver or bronze medals to all the competitorsThe result was a win for Brazil with England second and Argentina third.
A good day was had by all.

Summer Term Newsletter

This has been a busy term for the St. Edmund Campion School Cluster with so much going on.
There have been 4 festivals/tournaments which have been accessed by many of our primary schools and so involving a vast number of children in enjoyable challenges across both KS1 and 2.
Base clubs have also been running in 7 of our schools.

Straight after Easter came the Striking and Fielding Challenge but the timing was bad for some schools so St. Oswald's brought along the whole class and went through all of the challenges which they seemed to enjoy. Hopefully next year the date will better suit a few more schools and so make it an inter-school challenge.
Base clubs (balance, agility, speed and efficiency) were started up across the cluster with equipment bought from NOF funding. 8 of our schools hoped to take part in this initiative but the equipment was late into some schools and failed to arrive at all in one. The clubs seem to have been well received and run by interested teachers who undertook some training before running the clubs. Youngsters seem to enjoy the agility ladders and attempting to balance on the discs.
Northumbria University put on a coaching session in Netball and 10 girls from St. John the Baptist's went along. They had to work hard but no doubt learnt a lot!
I delivered TOP Gym training in Birtley St. Joseph's Juniors and St. John the Baptist primary schools to 16 primary school teachers who are now fully trained in TOP Gym and are the proud owners of the new TOP Gym cards. Well done to all of them.
I also delivered TOP Gym training to NQT's across the partnership.
All of the Primary Links Teachers attende Module training and the majority were there to fill in their PESSCL forms. My grateful thanks to everyone who completed theirs without me having to chase them. For the 2nd year we had an immediate 100% response.
The TOP Link 7-a-side tournament was held at St. E. C. School for years 5&6 girls to which 3 schools sent teams (2 schools prefered the date offered by another cluster and went there instead). All participants received either gold, silver or bronze medals which were fiercely fought for.
The KS1 Playday was a great success with 140 pupils being involved in the activities run by our year 10 pupils.
Lastly, Joe from Birtley St. Joseph's ran a boys and girls 7-a-side tournament on his pitch. 6 boys and 4 girls teams had a great afternoon in the sunshine and were rewarded with certificates and a football for the school. Thank you Joe.
My thanks to all the PLT's for their loyalty, dedication and sheer hard work this year. We are losing Anna (seconded for a year) and Rosaleen (best of luck with the forthcoming birth) so need to get 2 new PLT's into shape next year!
Thanks also to all the heads who have allowed PLT's to attend the meetings and bring teams to the events. I hope you used all of your 10 days!

Year 4 Strikng and Fielding Challenge

The year 4 Striking and Fielding Challenge was held at St. Edmund Campion School on the 2nd May 2006. St. Oswald's Primary Schol brought up all of the year 4's for an afternoon of fun.

Maybe because schools found this a busy time of year, only one school felt able to enter the Striking and Fielding Challenge held for the St. Edmund Campion School Cluster.
Rather than cancel the activities, St. Oswald's kindly agreed to bring along all of their year 4's for the afternoon.
All of the children tried every activity in teams of 4 and at the end, a winning team was found.
Four year 12's from St. Edmund Campion School organised each activity and my thanks go out to them for all of their invaluable help which enbled everyone to have an enjoyable afternoon.

Spring Newsletter

This has been a busy term for the partnership with so many things going on.
Festivals.
Equipment.
Training
Dates for Diary

This term seems to have been packed so I have not been available to visit all the PLT's individually which I will rectify this summer term.
Money has been made available through various fundings to purchase equipment for our schools and 8 of our cluster schools have promised to run clubs in exchange for BASE equipment.
Training has been available for those staff running the clubs and some lucky primaries even have students from Northumbria University coming in to run the clubs for them. As an added bonus, £200 will be transferred into their PE budget for the purchase of even more equipment. Well done to those schools who took up the challenge!
Two festivals have been organised this term at St. Edmund Campion School. The year 3 Springs Tennis Challenge had entries from only 2 schools but, umpired by our year 12 Community Sports Leaders, had some good games. The Multi Skills Challenge saw 7 teams competing and everyone worked hard (including the staff who were trying to keep the score!) to make the evening a success. Hopefully everyone enjoyed themselves and the summary of it is on the weblog.
Before the Multi Skills Challenge, I was invited into some of the competing schools to give the year 4's a taste of the challenges on offer. This was great fun for all concerned, including me!
I have also been into Hill Top School and St. John the Baptist Primary School helping with gymnastics and I hope this has been beneficial.
Training for primary school teachers was given in TOP Gymnastics at Birtley St. Joseph's School. Seven teachers put themselves through two evenings of fun (!) to complete the course. Multi Skills Challenge

The Year 4 Multi Skills Challenge was held at St. Edmund Campion School on Tuesday 21st March 2006.
Seven teams entered representing six primary shools and attempted to score as many points as possible from 10 events.

The Multi Skills challenge was well represented from pupils, teachers and parents who all enjoyed watching, scoring or participating in the 10 different activities set up to test various areas of fitness.
The year 4's competing were representing St. Oswald's, Birtley St. Joseph's. St. John the Baptist's, 2 teams from St. Peter's, St Anne's and Falla Park (who had missed their cluster festival so kindly joined ours).

Every team gave 100% effort and hopefully enjoyed the evening but the team with the most points at the end was Birtley St. Joseph's.
Thanks to all who participated and helped.

Dates for your diary

St. Edmund Campion Cluster held tournaments in High 5 Netball and mini Basketball this term. The winners of both went on to represent the cluster in the finals but as yet I have not had any results back.
This cluster combined with Joseph Swan, Heworth and Thomas Hepburn clusters to train primary teachers in TOP Play and TOP Sport. A good number of primaries availed themselves of the opportunity to send teachers for this training and were rewarded with the new TOP Play/Sport cards and handbook.
My thanks to Steve Davison and Matt Tellyn for their contributions to this course.
Earlier this term I visited all of the heads (those available) in our cluster and asked them to fill in a questionnaire which amongst other things asked what the main benefits of the SSCo programme have been (if any). I am pleased to say that the responses have all been positive so if there is an area that you feels needs to be addressed please let me know.
There have been 5 trainee Community Sports Leaders working in schools this term helping/taking football clubs and one for basketball. If any school is struggling to find people to help with clubs, let me know.
Three Sports Leaders have also continued on to the Step into Sport scheme for coaching in the community. One has gained his level 1 coaching award in basketball whilst all three have gained their level 1 referees award (also in basketball).
Dates for diaries:-
12th Jan Assessment for Learning course
Top Gym for NQT's
24th Jan Springs Tennis Challenge
27th Jan PLT Module 4 training
7th Feb PLT Meeting (provisional) 1.30pm

Thanks for all the support from you all.
Have a lovely Christmas and a peaceful New Year.

Cluster Basketball Tournament

The Year 5/6 cluster basketball tournament was held at St. Edmund Campion School on 15th Nov. 2005.

A total of 6 teams from 3 schools had hoped to compete but unfortunately 1 school had to withdraw at the last moment because of lack of support.
Teams came from St. Oswald's and St. Anne's and played 3 games each consisting of 4 quarters to a game.
All the players worked as hard as they could and never gave up which was excellent to see.
The final was between the 2 teams from St. Anne's and in a very close game the 'A' team narrowly beat the 'B' team to win the tournament.
The Fair Play Award was presented to St. Oswald's 'B' team who played consistently well throughout and showed an excellent attitude.
Well Done all who took part and a big ThankYou to the staff who brought and supported them and to the pupils who participated.

21 pupils from St. Peter's, St. John the Baptist's and St. Joseph's Gateshead all took part in the High 5 Netball Tournament held at St. Edmund Campion School on 11th Oct. 2005.
All participants played hard but fair and it was a close contest with St. Peter's managing to just win the tournament on the number of games won whilst St. John the Baptist's scored the most goals.
The Fair Play award went to St. Joseph's Gateshead.
Thanks to all who participated for an enjoyable tournament and also to the staff who brought the teams and umpired the games.

Year 4 Tennis Tournament

The Year 4 Tennis Tournament was held for cluster schools at St. Edmund Campion School on Tuesday 14th June.

The event was held playing short tennis in the school sportshall.

Only 2 schools were able to participate in this tournament, these being St. Peter's and St. Oswald's.

Teams consisted of 3 girls and 3 boys playing singles, competing in seperate games.

All the games were umpired by Year 12 boys taking their Community Sports Leaders awards. These were Allan Burns, Adam Carmichael and Steven Bigger and my thanks go to them for doing an excellent job.

St. Peter's were the stronger players on the day and won the majority of the games, in most cases by only one point from St. Oswalds.

Certificates were awarded to all competitors and my thanks go to them all and the teachers for giving up their time for this event.

KS1 PLAYDAY

The KS1 Playday was held at St. Edmund Campion School on 11th May on a rare lovely day.
5 primary schools, (making a total of 50 pupils) came to participate in a fun packed, active afternoon.

DSC00768.JPG
The sun shone for this fun event so we could make use of the school field and have plenty of room to spread out.
5 primary schools participated giving us a total of 50 KS1 pupils.
10 of our year 12 pupils taking their Sports Leaders awards worked with the children who were divided up into mixed school groups. They warmed them up, explained and supervised the activity and cooled them down at the end.
A much needed break for refreshments was taken half way through the afternoon.
Congratulations to all who took part and to the staff who gave up their time to bring them to make this a successful event which hopefully will be repeated next year.

ST EDMUND CAMPION CLUSTER

NEWSLETTER
March 2005.

* All primary schools in St. Edmund Campion School cluster have now joined the SSCo programme although 2 schools are unable to have a primary links teacher this year due to lack of staff.
* 5-a-side tournament. 5 teams competed in a well supported and fiercely fought contest. The behaviour and sportsmanship were excellent, producing a most enjoyable tournament with the winners being Birtley St. Joseph’s school. They now play the winners from the other clusters at Gateshead Stadium on 26th April.
* The half-termly meeting was used to discuss and agree upon a common form of assessment to be used in the cluster schools. The result is now in the process of being formatted by Jim Dawson at Hill Top school with out thanks. This should be ready to use for the summer term.
* ‘Kidz Get Fit’ organisation is running clubs in 4 schools at present. This is financed through NOF. This has the dual function of opening up OSHL to those who do not join in the games side but also helps to contribute to the government aim of 2 hours of PE and School Sport. Other schools will be accessing this organisation next term.
* KS4 girls who are at risk of disaffection from PE and School Sport are participating in horse riding funded through NOF. This is resulting in an improvement both in their participation in PE and their behaviour.
* 2 pupils from St. Edmund Campion School attended a 1 day training course for Step into Sport from which they gained a basketball qualification.
* Community Sports Leaders from St. E. C. School are currently running clubs in 3 cluster primary schools taking football, basketball and dance.
* A TOP Dance training course was run at St. E. C. School which 16 teachers attended.
* Birtley St. Joseph’s School have gained an FA charter and have established good links with Birtley Town Football Club. Joe McCormick is running a 7-a-side football festival in the summer term for any interested primary schools and is currently looking into the possibility of coaches from the club coming into the cluster schools to train pupils. Details will be given as soon as they are known.

Forthcoming Events

• KS1 Activities afternoon at St E. C. School.
• 7-a-side football festival at Birtley St. Joseph’s School.
• Kwik cricket festival run in conjunction with Gateshead cricket clubs. Coaching given by them.
