St.Thomas More Cluster Basketball Tournament

The St. Thomas More basketball tournament was held on Wednesday 15th. November. Five schools entered with Highfield St. Josephs, Blaydon St. Josephs and St. Marys’ all entering an A and B team each giving a total entry of eight teams. The competition was a round robin format with every team playing each other. This gave us a total of twenty eight games which were played over one and three quarter hours.
Each game was six minutes long resulting in each team being on court for forty two minutes. At the end of the evening there were a lot of red faced; tired children but everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
The games were very competitive but in the end The St. Agnes’ trophy was won by St. Mary’s, the first time this school has won a cluster tournament. Following their success in the netball, Highfield St. Josephs’ took the silver medals and St. Agnes’ the bronze. Vicky Holmes, one of Gatesheads’ young ambassadors, awarded the fair play certificate to St. Agnes.
Once again every pupil who played in the tournament were given a certificate and every team received two basketballs for their participation in the event.

On Wednesday 11th. October the St. Thomas More Cluster of primary schools held their Annual High Five Netball tournament. Six schools entered, of which four schools entered two teams each, giving a total entry of ten teams. The previous year was wet but this year was even wetter, not that the competitors minded. The array of umbrellas added colour to the proceedings. The competition was split into two leagues with the top team in each playing the runners up in the other league. The winners of these matches then played off for champions and runners up while the losers played off for third and fourth positions.
Highfield St. Josephs played Blaydon St. Josephs in the final with Highfield retaining the Corpus Christi High five trophy and winning the gold medals. Blaydon, St. Josephs gained the silver medals for the second year running while St. Philip Neri from Dunston beat St. Agnes from Crawcrook to secure the bronze medals. Every pupil who participated in the competition received a certificate while every team received two netballs each. New for this year is the St. Thomas More fair play trophy. This is to be awarded at the end of the year to the school that accumulates the most fair play points over the season. St. Mary and St. Thomas Aquinas from Stella gained the first point of the year.
